Year of the Coast 2023

The UK coastline ranks as one of the most exciting in the world; more than 185 million years old, and one of the most varied – rich in maritime history, family attractions, natural beauty and unique sea life. Year of the Coast 2023 will coordinate and amplify a year-long programme of events and promotion of the whole of England’s coastline. Led by the National Coastal Tourism Academy, working in partnership with Destination Management Organisations across the country, visibility will be maximised to raise awareness of the coastline and inspire new audiences to love, visit and protect it. Through this initiative the coast will be promoted as a sustainable year-round destination, raising awareness of issues impacting coastal communities and businesses, and showcasing new developments and products.

Why is 2023 the Year of the Coast?

2023 heralds the completion of the England Coast Path, which will be over 2,700 miles long making it the longest marked walking route in the world, and also marks Year of the Pier. This creates a platform for destinations and businesses to collaborate in order to raise the profile of the coast, and for visitors to explore new coastal locations.

How will Year of the Coast be promoted?

A dedicated website has been created by the National Coastal Tourism Academy, and will be supported by online marketing and press activity. Visit County Durham will create a content hub on thisisdurham.com, promoted through blogs, social media and press.
