Press Release

Durham set to bowl over cricket fans this summer

Publication Date: 14th Jun 2023

Visit County Durham is once again teaming up with The Barmy Army to showcase Durham as a holiday destination to cricket fans.

Following a successful partnership during the Cricket World Cup, Visit County Durham is delighted to be working with the original England cricket team’s supporter club ahead of two international matches taking place in the county this year.

On Wednesday 30 August, England’s men’s team will take on New Zealand at Durham Cricket’s Seat Unique Riverside ground in Chester-le-Street. And on Saturday 9 September, England’s women’s team will play Sri Lanka at the same venue.

Both games are expected to attract thousands of fans, and with the women’s match taking place on a weekend, it is a fantastic opportunity to encourage visitors to extend their visit into a short break.

The Barmy Army’s highly engaged marketing channels present an effective way of promoting these opportunities ahead of the matches, alongside Visit County Durham’s own consumer channels, This is Durham. Activity will also encourage visitors to return and explore more of the county at a later date.

Michelle Gorman, managing director of Visit County Durham, said: “Hosting international cricket matches in Durham is something we are incredibly proud of. These games are televised across the world and attract thousands of cricket fans into the county. By joining forces with The Barmy Army, we can connect with these fans and promote Durham as a fantastic short break destination now and in the future.”

Chris Millard, managing director of The Barmy Army, said: “The Barmy Army is thrilled to partner with This Is Durham again in 2023. Chester-le-Street is one of The Barmy Army’s favourite cricketing venues, and we've fallen in love with the beautiful surrounding areas and the warm hospitality we've always received on every visit.

“We'll be traveling up again this summer to watch England play New Zealand, and will definitely be extending our stay over the bank holiday weekend. Our goal is to build on our previous partnership by letting sports fans across the country know what Durham has to offer.”
