Dalton Park puts best green foot forward with double award win

Publication Date: 14th Apr 2023

Dalton Park Outlet Shopping Destination has achieved two top accolades in recognition of its ongoing commitment to sustainability.

The centre won the Greener Business Award at the County Durham Environment Awards in February before scooping the gong for Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism in the North East England Tourism Awards at a glittering ceremony that took place in late March.

Organised by the Environment and Climate Change Partnership, the County Durham Environment Awards recognise projects that demonstrate great design, environmental guardianship and community spirit across the county.

The North East England Tourism Awards celebrate businesses in a wide range of categories from accessibility and inclusivity to resilience and innovation.

Both entries reflected the huge amount of work carried out by the team at Dalton Park as part of their commitment to leading the way in greener, ethical, responsible and sustainable operations.

Notable projects that were highlighted included: massive energy savings, the centre’s green corporate partnership with Climate Action North, development of its 55 acres of landscaped Parkland, a campaign to become the first retail scheme in the North to introduce a wildflower meadow through the Pollinator Parks® scheme, its first fully sustainable retail event ‘EcoFest’ and a reduced carbon Christmas decoration scheme in 2022.

Richard Kaye, Centre Manager at Dalton Park, said: “We are thrilled to have won not one, but two awards that recognise our sustainability efforts.

“We continuously work to identify new ways for Dalton Park and our brands to reduce their carbon footprint and introduce greener practices. These awards are testament to the commitment shown by our team and brand partners here at Dalton Park.

“The next 12 months will see a whole host of new and improved ethical, responsible and sustainable initiatives introduced.

“A proposal is now in place for additional solar panels to be fitted to Dalton Park’s roof, a strategy for enhanced segregation of food waste is underway and we are in the final stages of agreeing a new, local charity to support during 2023.

“We are also eagerly waiting to see if our project to encourage swifts back to the local area with the introduction of three swift boxes will be successful.

“The awards are extra special as we get ready to celebrate our 20th anniversary this year and we will continue to be dedicated to making sure we are doing everything we can to make a positive impact on the environment.”
