Publication Date: 20th Mar 2026

Durham’s visitor economy is celebrating a strong showing at the prestigious Destination North East England Tourism Awards, with businesses and organisations across the county recognised for excellence.

The annual awards brought together more than 450 industry leaders at Newcastle’s Civic Centre last night (Thursday, 19 March), to celebrate the very best of the North East’s tourism and hospitality sector.

Following a rigorous judging process, which included mystery visits and expert assessments, a number of Durham businesses were recognised across a range of categories, highlighting the quality, diversity and strength of the destination’s visitor offer.

Durham secured Gold in a number of key categories, with Rockliffe Hall named Large Hotel of the Year and Dalton Park Outlet & Outdoors receiving the Regenerative Tourism Award. These accolades recognise excellence in both high-quality accommodation and sustainable tourism, reinforcing the county's position as a destination offering outstanding visitor experiences.

Kynren scooped a hattrick of awards on the night, receiving Gold for Tourism Event and Festival of the Year following a public vote, whilst its volunteer team, the Kynren Archers, were awarded Gold in the Volunteer of the Year category. Jaden Dixon from Kynren was also recognised with Silver in the Rising Star Award, highlighting the talent and dedication within the sector.

Many more of the county’s visitor economy businesses were also recognised, including Seaham Hall (Small Hotel of the Year – Silver), Babul’s (Taste of North East England Award – Silver), Dalton Park Outlet & Outdoors (Accessible and Inclusive Tourism Award – Silver), Beamish, The Living Museum of the North (Large Visitor Attraction of the Year – Silver), and Dalton Moor Farm & School of Sustainable Living & Wellbeing (Regenerative Tourism Award – Bronze).

Michelle Gorman, managing director, Visit County Durham, said: “We’re incredibly proud to see so many of our Durham businesses recognised at this year’s awards. These results reflect the passion, quality and commitment that runs throughout our visitor economy, from world-class attractions and events to exceptional places to stay and eat. It’s fantastic to see Durham represented across so many categories and receive recognition for the people that make the county so special, and we wish all of our winners the very best as they go on to represent the region at the national VisitEngland Awards.”
