A message from Visit County Durham's managing director, Michelle Gorman

Publication Date: 12th Jan 2024

2023 has drawn to a close and what an eventful and successful year it was for Durham. The incredible £1bn milestone was achieved for the value of the county's visitor economy, and world-class attractions and visitor accommodation opened to further strengthen our visitor offer. The county secured positive tourism-related media coverage worth over £14m, and the dedicated tourism website, thisisdurham.com, received over 1 million visits showcasing our partner products to potential new customers.

As we head into 2024, the pace of progress shows no signs of slowing down, with major investment continuing at attractions and accommodation across the county. Spring will be the season of new beginnings with a number of exciting developments set to be completed. At Raby Estates, The Rising will feature reimagined walled gardens, restored heritage buildings and Vinery Cafe Restaurant. New Hall at Locomotion will create the largest collection of historic rail vehicles, under cover and on site, anywhere in the world. And at Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, the 1950s Town will see further exhibits open their doors, including the much anticipated cinema, alongside the exciting launch of Georgian-themed accommodation.

With the spotlight set to shine brightly on Durham over the next 12 months and beyond, watch out for next week's Grapevine Special which will provide information on how to get business-ready for 2024 by taking advantage of training and opportunities being offered by Visit County Durham.

I would like to wish you all a happy and successful new year.

Best wishes,
Michelle
