20 Faces of Tourism - David Jackson

Over the last 20 years, I think County Durham’s tourism offer has improved significantly. The range of activities available has grown considerably, with something now on offer for everyone. Existing venues have also enhanced their experiences, making them more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. Without a doubt, the marketing of the region has improved immeasurably, helping to showcase everything County Durham has to offer.

I think perceptions of County Durham have changed too. Traditionally, Durham may have been viewed as a historic destination attracting visitors interested in its heritage and historic sites. While that heritage remains a huge part of its appeal, the county now offers a much broader range of attractions and activities to suit all tastes. Even historic locations have evolved their visitor experiences to make them more engaging for younger audiences.

At Durham Cricket, we regularly welcome visitors from across the UK and overseas, particularly for international fixtures. Many people attend matches and take the opportunity to spend time exploring Durham during their visit. Cricket provides another reason for people to come to the county, and the continued promotion of Durham as a visitor destination undoubtedly benefits our venue and the wider visitor economy.

I believe Visit County Durham has been a driving force behind the evolution of the visitor economy. The organisation guides, supports and promotes businesses across the region while providing a central platform where people can discover everything the county has to offer. By bringing together such a diverse range of attractions, experiences and businesses, it increases the appeal of the region as a whole and helps visitors see the full breadth of opportunities available.

Rather than any one campaign standing out, for me it is the ongoing work Visit County Durham does and the central hub it provides that adds the greatest value. Allowing people to see the range of attractions available, rather than exploring each option in isolation, elevates the appeal of the region and benefits all of the individual organisations involved, including ourselves here at Durham Cricket.

I would describe Visit County Durham as supportive, engaging and creative. Supportive in the way it champions businesses across the county, engaging in how it brings organisations together and connects them with visitors, and creative in the way it promotes County Durham and showcases the diverse experiences available across the region.
