20 Faces of Tourism - Wendy Wilshere

County Durham has changed enormously over the last 20 years. The quality of the visitor experience has continued to grow, with fantastic investment in attractions and a constantly evolving offer that gives people more reasons to visit. We've also seen a real growth in accommodation, from trusted national brands to unique independent places to stay, making it much easier for visitors to spend longer exploring the county.

People have always known County Durham is a special place, but I think far more people now recognise just how much there is to see and do. Winning Best UK Destination for a second consecutive year is something everyone in the county can be proud of, and it's a reflection of how far we've come. More visitors are choosing to stay for a short break rather than simply passing through, because they realise there's so much to discover.

Over the last 10 years, Kynren has become one of County Durham's flagship attractions and has helped put Bishop Auckland firmly on the visitor map. The launch of Kynren – The Storied Lands is another exciting step forward and will strengthen the town's reputation as a destination with world-class experiences. What makes Kynren really special, though, is the difference it has made to the local community through volunteering, regeneration and bringing people together. Visitors often tell us that the warmth and welcome they receive here is one of the things they remember most.

Visit County Durham has played a vital role in bringing the tourism industry together. It has created opportunities for attractions, accommodation providers, restaurants and experiences to work collaboratively, share ideas and promote the county as one destination. The support, marketing and networking it provides have helped businesses build lasting partnerships and given County Durham a much stronger voice nationally.

I've particularly enjoyed taking part in Visit County Durham's 'On the Road' events. Representing the county alongside other tourism businesses at events such as the Great Yorkshire Show, Excursions, Group Leisure & Travel Show and the British Tourism & Travel Show has been a fantastic opportunity. Meeting group travel organisers face-to-face and promoting County Durham together really highlights the collaborative approach that makes the county so successful.

Visit County Durham has achieved so much over the past 20 years and continue to champion the region by being collaborative and supportive.
